The Corkscrew Bridge sits on the Old East Entrance Road, the earlier alignment that carried travelers up Sylvan Pass on the east side of Yellowstone. Its looping, spiraling form was a practical answer to a steep climb: the road wound back over itself so vehicles could gain elevation without a grade that was too severe for the cars and trucks of the period. Built during the era of major road work in the national park, the structure reflects the engineering choices that shaped how visitors reached the high country. Its curves still show the effort it took to bring automobiles over this mountain pass.
