Visitors entering Yellowstone in the early 1900s passed through a gateway like the one shown here, and this stereograph records horse-drawn carriages and coaches waiting at the entrance. The arch is most likely the Roosevelt Arch at the North Entrance near Gardiner, Montana, completed in 1903 and dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt that spring. Yellowstone, set aside in 1872 as the first national park, relied on stagecoach and wagon travel well into the period. The American Stereoscopic Company of New York published the card around 1904, and it was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth.
