Few landmarks in the park announced arrival as plainly as the entrance checking stations, where rangers and clerks stopped motorists to collect fees and log visitors before they crossed into Yellowstone. Yellowstone became the first national park in the United States in 1872, and by the early twentieth century automobiles were rapidly replacing the stagecoaches and rail tours that had carried earlier travelers. Structures like these, built to handle a growing stream of cars on the park's roads, show how the management of the park shifted from horse-drawn tourism to motor travel. Look closely at the roadside setting and the vehicles waiting in line for a sense of that transition.
