Yellowstone's roads and bridges are the subject here, presented as a record of how visitors moved through the park over time. When Yellowstone was set aside in 1872 as the first national park, travelers reached it on horseback or by stagecoach over rough trails. Automobiles were first admitted in 1915, and the park's road network, including the Grand Loop, was built out over the following decades to carry them. The sequence of transportation shown reflects that shift from animal power to the motor car, and the bridges along the way were built to span the park's rivers and canyons.
