Yellowstone's roads were built to carry visitors through a wilderness that had no rail line inside its borders, and this image traces how that network changed over time. Early routes were rough wagon tracks and then gravel roads cut for horse-drawn coaches, and the switch to automobiles in the 1910s and 1920s pushed engineers to widen grades, reinforce bridges, and realign curves. The gallery's view of the park's road and vehicle history shows how each change reshaped what visitors could see and how long their trips took. Look closely at the road surface and the vehicles to see how much the park's travel depended on the machines of its day.
