Yellowstone's roadside rest stops, known as waysides and pullouts, were built to give motorists a safe place to stop and take in the scenery. The park's road network grew out of the early twentieth century, when automobiles began replacing horse-drawn stagecoaches and touring wagons on routes once traveled slowly and with difficulty. Early pullouts were often modest, with stone or log construction and simple parking areas, designed to fit the landscape rather than dominate it. Look for how these structures blend into the surrounding forest and meadow, a deliberate choice that reflects the National Park Service's emphasis on minimizing visual impact.
