Two stagecoaches pass each other on a mountain road in Yellowstone National Park, a scene that shows how many visitors still traveled the park in 1903. Yellowstone, set aside as the first national park in 1872, relied on horse-drawn coaches for touring for decades, and automobiles were not allowed inside its boundaries until 1915. The print is part of the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress, but its caption comes from old, unverified cards, so the exact road and the people aboard are best treated with care. The heavy coach bodies and the teams of horses pulling them are worth a close look.
