Minerva Terrace is one of the best-known formations at Mammoth Hot Springs in northern Yellowstone, where mineral-rich water rising through limestone cools and deposits calcium carbonate in pale, stepped ledges. This Whiting View Company stereograph, issued in Cincinnati around 1904, was made to be seen through a stereoscope, which merged its two slightly offset photographs into a single three-dimensional view of the terrace. Cards like this one brought images of distant landmarks such as Yellowstone into parlors across the country, letting viewers who would never visit the park see its strange, sculpted surfaces up close.
