Pulpit Terrace is a rounded shelf of travertine in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone, built up over long periods as mineral-laden water deposited layers of stone. Its name comes from the way its raised lip resembles a preacher's pulpit. The Whiting View Company of Cincinnati issued this stereograph around 1904, and it was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two side-by-side photographs into a single three-dimensional scene. Cards like this brought the park's unusual landscapes to armchair travelers who would never see them in person.
