Jupiter Terrace, one of the travertine ledges near Mammoth Hot Springs in northern Yellowstone, is the feature this view centers on. Mineral-rich water flowing over the slopes left layers of white calcium carbonate that built up into the terraced formations. The Detroit Photographic Company issued many views of the park around 1905, when horse-drawn stagecoaches still carried most visitors along its roads, before automobiles became common there. The coach in this scene is a reminder of how tourists reached the park's wonders in that era.
