Visitors arriving at Gardner Station, the railhead at Yellowstone's north entrance, changed from train to coach here for the trip into the park. The Northern Pacific's Yellowstone branch brought passengers to this point, where the park's touring coaches and stagecoaches waited to carry them over the mountain roads. The photograph shows that handoff between rail and horse-drawn travel, a common scene in the years before automobiles took over park tours. It is a useful record of how early tourists reached the park's interior.
