Jupiter Terrace is one of the travertine formations at Mammoth Hot Springs, in the park's northern section near Gardiner, Montana. Its tiered ledges and pools are built from calcium carbonate that hot spring water picks up from limestone underground and leaves behind as it cools at the surface. Because the water flow shifts over time, the terraces can grow, dry out, and reform, so the same spot can look quite different from one decade to the next. Mammoth drew some of the park's earliest visitors after Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and its terraces remain among its most recognizable features.
