Jupiter Terrace sits among the travertine formations at Mammoth Hot Springs in the northern part of Yellowstone, where hot water carrying dissolved limestone spills over the edges of its basins and leaves banded white and tan deposits behind. The shelves grow slowly and change shape as the water flow shifts, which is part of why early visitors found the site so striking. Surveyors and artists who reached the region in the early 1870s, including members of the Hayden Survey, helped bring images of these features to the eastern United States, and their work contributed to the case for protecting the area as a national park in 1872. The terrace's stepped forms show, in stone, how water has worked on the landscape over a very long time.
