Pulpit Terraces is a stepped formation of sinter on the slopes above Yellowstone's Mammoth Hot Springs, and this view looks down across its pale, rounded ledges from above. The terraces form as hot water carrying dissolved calcium carbonate spills over the lip of each basin and cools, leaving thin layers of travertine that build up over time. Mammoth's terraces are among the most visibly active sites in the park, changing shape as water flow shifts from one channel to another. Photographs taken from above like this one show the scale and symmetry of the deposits that ground-level views tend to miss.
