Stepped travertine terraces, with turquoise pools spilling over their rims, are the focus here, the kind of formation found at Mammoth Hot Springs in the park's north. The terraces build up slowly as hot spring water cools and drops its dissolved calcium carbonate, while heat-loving bacteria and algae tint the water in shades of blue, green, and orange. Yellowstone had become the nation's first national park in 1872, and by 1898 visitors were arriving in growing numbers to see such sights. The board groups this view with work by Jackson, Hayden, and Moran, whose names are tied to the 1871 federal survey that brought the park's wonders to wide public attention.
