Few features in Yellowstone look quite like the Paint Pot, a basin of bubbling gray, pink and ochre mud in the Lower Geyser Basin near Fountain Geyser. Its colors come from clays and iron-bearing minerals that hot, acidic water and steam have broken down from the surrounding volcanic rock, and the thick mud spatters and plops in a way that has long fascinated visitors. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and in the decades after, its thermal features were among the subjects artists and photographers most often recorded for audiences who had never seen such ground for themselves.
