The Paint Pot is one of the Fountain Paint Pots in the Lower Geyser Basin, where acidic, hot water and steam break down the surrounding volcanic rock into thick, bubbling clay. Iron and other minerals in the clay give the pools their pinks, ochres and grays, and the surface shifts as gas pushes up through the mud. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and features like this one drew early visitors who had few words for such a strange landscape. The picture shows how the thermal basins looked to those who first came to see them.
