Sapphire Pool sits in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone, a hot spring whose deep, clear blue water earns its name from the way it reflects the sky. The pool's surface is ringed by sinter terraces built up over centuries by silica-rich water cooling and depositing minerals. Jackson Hayden Moran's view of it belongs to the early photographic record of the park, when Yellowstone was newly established as the first national park in 1872 and visitors were beginning to bring back images of its thermal wonders. Its bright, unbroken color is worth noticing, since it reflects the chemistry and heat that keep the basin's features in constant change.
