Mammoth Hot Springs, in the northern part of Yellowstone National Park, is built on terraces of travertine, a limestone deposited by hot water that rises through the underlying rock and cools at the surface. Over thousands of years the mineral-laden water has stacked these pale, stepped pools and ledges, which shift in color and shape as the flow changes. The hotel buildings in the scene reflect the early tourism that made the site a destination soon after the park was established in 1872, when visitors came to soak in and view the formations. Worth noticing is how the built structures sit directly against the living, still-growing deposits.
