The Paint Pots sit in a small thermal basin in Yellowstone's Lower Geyser Basin, where acidic hot springs have turned clay and rock into a palette of pinks, ochres and grays. Bubbling mud pools here are a reminder of the park's volcanic foundation, which still heats groundwater just beneath the surface. Yellowstone was set aside in 1872 as the first national park in the United States, and early visitors came to see features like these as wonders of nature. Hayden Moran's view captures the soft, layered colors that made this corner of the park one of its most memorable stops.
