Few features in Yellowstone look as unlikely as the Paint Pot, where acidic hot water works on clay and rock to form bubbling pools of gray, pink and ochre mud. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and in the decades that followed, survey photographers and painters worked to show eastern audiences geysers, hot springs and mud pots they had never seen. Worth noticing is how the mud's color and texture shift with temperature and mineral content, so the same spot can look quite different from one visit to the next.
