Few early photographs show a car perched on a dam, and this one, captioned as an automobile above Shoshone Dam, puts a touring vehicle at an unusual vantage point. The image is attributed to J.E. Haynes of St. Paul, whose studio supplied many views of Yellowstone and the surrounding region in the early twentieth century. Around 1917, private automobiles were still a new presence in the national parks, which had long been served mainly by horse-drawn stages and rail connections. The photograph captures that transition, when the car was becoming a common way for visitors to reach remote scenery.
