This photograph shows motorists camping at the public auto camp at Mammoth Hot Springs, the park's headquarters area in northwestern Wyoming. Yellowstone opened to automobiles in 1915, and by about 1920 cars were replacing horse-drawn stages as the main way visitors reached the park's geysers and hot springs. Designated camps like this one gave drivers a place to pitch tents and park overnight near services. The photograph is credited to Haynes, the family of photographers who worked in Yellowstone for decades, and the date and caption come from an older catalog card, so they are worth checking against other sources.
