A small convoy of early automobiles appears among the limestone pillars known as the Hoodoos, a jumbled stretch of eroded rock in Yellowstone National Park. The picture is a stereograph, meant to be seen through a stereoscope as a single three-dimensional scene, and it was issued by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1918. Private cars were allowed on Yellowstone's roads only from 1915 onward, so the card captures the years when motoring was opening the park to ordinary visitors. Keystone's stereo cards were sold widely as home entertainment and travel souvenirs, and this one shows how quickly the automobile was becoming part of the park's landscape.
