A president feeding a bear is an unusual sight, and this stereograph records one: Warren G. Harding offering food to a bear named Max in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Harding visited the park in June 1923 during a western tour that ended with his death in San Francisco that August. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, one of the largest makers of stereo cards in the early twentieth century, issued the image around 1923. Roadside and campground bears were a familiar part of Yellowstone tourism then, and the scene shows how casually visitors once approached wildlife, a practice the park later worked to end.
