Small figures stand among the eroded rock and broken ground in this 1903 print, which shows visitors examining the land itself rather than the famous geysers. Yellowstone had been set aside as the first national park in 1872, and by the early 1900s rail lines and stagecoach routes were bringing growing numbers of travelers to its formations and thermal features. The photograph comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress, which holds many of her images of American life and places from this period. Its record notes that the title was supplied by Library staff, so the scene is described rather than captioned by the photographer.
