Gibbon Cascades sits on the Gibbon River a short distance above its confluence with the Firehole, where the water drops over a series of stepped ledges in a narrow canyon of pale volcanic rock. Stereo cards like this one were a popular way to bring such views to parlors in the late 1800s, when Yellowstone was still a newly created national park and few visitors had made the difficult trip themselves. Looking at the two slightly offset images through a stereoscope gives the falls a sense of depth that a flat print cannot match. The card shows how early photographers worked to make the park's scenery feel close at hand.
