In this view, William Henry Jackson stands on a cliff with a companion and their photographic equipment, a reminder that the people making these images had to haul heavy glass plates and cameras into rough country. Jackson worked as a photographer for the Hayden Geological Survey during its early-1870s expeditions to the Yellowstone region. His pictures of its canyons, waterfalls and hot springs reached Congress and helped build support for setting the area aside as the first national park in 1872. The record dates the print only to between 1871 and 1878, so it likely comes from the same survey years.
