Here the sitter is the photographer himself, William Henry Jackson, shown seated in profile and at work on one of his Oregon Trail paintings. Jackson is best known for his photographs from the Hayden Survey of 1871, whose images of Yellowstone helped persuade Congress to set the area aside as a national park in 1872. Later in his long life he turned to painting, and his canvases of wagon trains and western trails drew on the same field experience. The caption card gives no date, but the portrait shows an artist who had already spent decades documenting the American West.
