Jackson's view of the Yellowstone Valley shows the river winding through open country, the kind of wide, unbroken scene the survey wanted to record. William Henry Jackson took it as photographer for the Hayden Geological Survey during its 1871 expedition to the region. Prints from that expedition were shown in Washington and helped persuade Congress to set the area aside as Yellowstone National Park in 1872. The "No. 200" in the record suggests the picture belonged to a numbered series of the survey's views.
