Steam rises from a line of geysers across a broad valley in Yellowstone, with a small herd of bison grazing in the foreground. Yellowstone became the first national park in the United States in 1872, and its thermal features drew early photographers and painters who wanted to show Americans a landscape unlike any other. Pictures like this one, which set wildlife against the geothermal basin, were part of how the park was presented to a public that had mostly never seen it. The "Wonderland" name on the board refers to the nickname often given to the park in the late nineteenth century, when its geysers and hot springs were widely described as wonders of the continent.
