Labeled the second canyon of the Yellowstone, this stereo card shows the river cutting through a steep, colorful gorge. It is number 420 in a series called *Scenery of the Yellowstone*, issued in 1871 and published by William I. Marshall (1840-1906). That year coincided with the Hayden Geological Survey's expedition to the region, whose photographers, including William Henry Jackson, recorded its canyons and waterfalls. Viewed through a stereoscope, cards like this gave parlor audiences a sense of depth in landscapes most would never see in person.
