The Great Blue Spring, in the Lower Geyser Basin of Yellowstone, is the subject here, and its deep blue water is the feature that drew the eye of the artist. The initials "TM" in the record point to Thomas Moran, whose sketches from the 1871 Hayden Survey became the basis for many Yellowstone images. Louis Prang's firm in Boston reproduced such scenes as chromolithographs in the 1870s, using many stones to build up color so that a wide public could own a version of the wilderness that few had seen in person.
