This chromolithograph shows the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a gorge whose colored walls drew explorers and painters to the region in the early 1870s. Louis Prang & Co., the Boston firm that printed it, built its reputation on color reproductions of popular scenes sold to homes and schools across the country. Congress had set the surrounding land aside as Yellowstone National Park in 1872, only a few years before this print appeared, and images like this one helped make the park's landscape familiar to people who would never see it firsthand.
