Tower Falls, a cascade named for the columns of volcanic rock beside it, is paired here with Sulphur Mountain, whose yellowed slopes mark the hot springs and vents of Yellowstone. The print is credited to Prang's American Chromo and carries the initials "TM," which most likely stand for Thomas Moran, the painter who joined the 1871 Hayden Survey and made Yellowstone watercolors later reproduced in color. Louis Prang's Boston firm used chromolithography, a method that layered several stones to build up color, to bring scenes like this into American homes in the 1870s, when most people had never seen the park.
