Tower Falls takes its name from the tall volcanic spires of rock that rise beside its cascade on Tower Creek, and this chromolithograph gives those pinnacles and the rushing water equal weight. Louis Prang's Boston firm produced it around 1875, a few years after Congress made Yellowstone the first national park in 1872. Prang's color prints carried images of western scenery to eastern parlors and classrooms, at a time when many Americans knew such landscapes only through written accounts and expedition reports. Notice how the printers layered many stones of color to suggest the warm tones of the rock and the cool shadows of the falls.
