This chromolithograph of the Lower Yellowstone range, dated 1874, reflects Thomas Moran's work after he joined the Hayden Geological Survey's 1871 expedition to the region. Congress had set aside Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872, and prints like this carried its canyons and mountains to eastern audiences who would never see them in person. Published by L. Prang & Co. of Boston, the print was built from several separate stone impressions, each inked in a different color, so the layered tints of the slopes and water took careful registration to line up.
