Rather than a photograph, this is a color halftone reproduction of a painting by Thomas Moran, whose canvases of Yellowstone helped persuade Congress to set the area aside as the first national park in 1872. Moran traveled with the Hayden Survey in 1871, sketching the river and its cliffs, and his finished paintings brought those views to people who would never see them in person. Printed around 1911, this copy was registered for copyright, suggesting it was made for wide circulation.
