Few places in the American West drew more attention in 1871 than the canyon cut by the Yellowstone River, and this card, No. 447, shows its colored walls as parlor viewers saw them through a stereoscope. It belongs to a series titled *Scenery of the Yellowstone*, issued that year by publisher William I. Marshall, who sold such views to a public eager for images of distant wonders. In 1871 the Hayden Geological Survey explored the region, and photographs and paintings from the expedition helped persuade Congress to set the area aside as a national park in 1872. The catalog also files the card under Colorado rock formations, so the subject tag is worth checking against the scene itself.
