The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where the river has cut deep, colored walls through volcanic rock, is the subject here, and the stereo pair gives its cliffs and falls a depth a flat view could not. The card belongs to a series issued in 1871, the year of Ferdinand Hayden's federal survey of the region, when photographers including William Henry Jackson documented the area. Those images helped build the case for setting the land aside as a national park in 1872. Publisher William I. Marshall sold cards like this for viewing in a stereoscope, which brought distant scenery into parlors across the country.
