Few places in the park pack as many famous sights into one view as this set, which pairs the Great Falls of the Yellowstone River, where the water drops roughly 308 feet, with the nearby Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the eroded Mushroom Rock formation. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and by the late nineteenth century railroad and stagecoach travelers were making the trip to see these sights for themselves. The canyon walls show bands of yellow and rust-colored rock, altered by hot water and steam long after the lava cooled, while Mushroom Rock shows how wind and weather carve softer stone into odd shapes. Views like this were how many Americans far from the West first saw these wonders.
