The title calls this cataract the Grand Falls of the Yellowstone and gives its height as 380 feet. The Yellowstone River drops over its edge into a steep canyon of colored rock, a setting that drew visitors after Congress made the area the first national park in 1872. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that sold stereographs in large numbers, issued the view around 1901, when railroad travel was bringing more tourists to the park. Seen through a stereoscope, the paired images gave parlor audiences a sense of depth that a flat photograph could not.
