Few sites in the park draw the eye like the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, where the water plunges roughly 308 feet into the canyon below. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and by the early 1900s its waterfalls and canyon views were among the most widely reproduced scenes in the country. Stereographs like this one paired two slightly offset photographs on a card, which a hand stereoscope fused into a single image with a sense of depth that flat prints could not match. The card's title calls the site the Grand Falls, a name that stresses the scale that made the spot a landmark.
