The Grand Falls of the Yellowstone, as this card names them, are today called the Lower Falls, where the river drops roughly 308 feet into the canyon below and ranks among the park's most visited sights. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and by the early 1900s the falls were a standard stop for tourists, who bought stereo cards like this one to relive their trips at home through a stereoscope. The copyright notice and numbering on the card reflect how commercial view makers of the era registered and sold their scenes. The label itself shows how early visitors reached for grand descriptions when naming the park's landmarks.
