The view pairs the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with Mushroom Rock, a wind- and water-eroded column whose capped top gives it the name. The canyon was cut through soft volcanic rock by the Yellowstone River, and its colored walls drew early visitors long before the region became the nation's first national park in 1872. Pictures like this were often sold as stereoscopic cards, which let viewers see the scenery in apparent depth through a viewer. Such cards helped shape how Americans pictured the park as a place of wonder.
