The canyon of the Yellowstone River, with its steep walls and falling water, was one of the region's most talked-about sights by 1871. This stereograph, No. 447 in the series *Scenery of the Yellowstone 1871*, was issued by publisher William Isaac Marshall and records a landscape that the federal survey of that year had just brought to national attention. Stereo cards like this were viewed through a hand-held viewer to create a sense of depth, which helped bring distant western scenery into parlors across the country. The record's subject heading lists Colorado, but the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is in Wyoming, so readers should check the location when using the card.
