Lower Falls, where the Yellowstone River drops about 308 feet into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, is the tallest waterfall in the park and one of its best-known sights. The canyon's yellow, rust, and ochre walls come from rock that hot groundwater and steam altered over long periods, and the river has cut this gorge through that soft stone. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and scenes like this one helped draw early visitors who had only heard secondhand accounts of the region. Look for the mist rising from the base and the white curtain of water at the lip.
