Lower Falls, where the Yellowstone River plunges roughly 308 feet into its canyon, was one of the park's most celebrated sights, and this c1908 view frames the cascade between the rock walls. It is a carbon print made from a large mammoth plate negative, a process valued for its deep, stable tones. The Detroit Publishing Co. sold scenic views of the American West to tourists and rail travelers, and this print was registered for copyright, as its deposit number shows.
