The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, a drop of about 308 feet in the canyon near the park's center, is the subject of this carbon print from around 1908. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued large-format views of the American West, made many images like it to show visitors and armchair travelers the scenery of Yellowstone, the country's first national park, established in 1872. Its mammoth-plate negative captures the canyon walls and the cascade's full width, and the carbon process gives the water and rock a deep, tonal richness. Copyright deposit records and later library stamps on the mount help trace the print's path into the collection.
