The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone drop about 308 feet over a basalt cliff in the canyon, and this albumen print from around 1892 captures that plunge from a viewpoint the early park tourist trade made famous. The print comes from the studio of William Henry Jackson, the photographer whose images of Yellowstone helped persuade Congress to protect the area as the first national park in 1872. Its later place in the Detroit Publishing Company collection shows how widely such views circulated as travel souvenirs, carrying the park's scenery to viewers far from Wyoming.
